Building America Expert Meeting 2011: The Role of Appraisals in Energy Efficiency Retrofit Financing
BIRA recently hosted a Building America Expert Meeting “The Role of Appraisals in Energy Efficiency Retrofit Financing”. As the Building America program continues to research all facets of the residential building industry and develop cost-effective, energy efficient building strategies, the need to better understand current appraisal standards and how to recognize energy efficient homes remains. “The Role of Appraisals in Energy Efficiency Financing” sought to connect the appraisal, finance and retrofit industries to foster dialogue among experts in these fields to discuss ways to make financing for energy efficiency more readily available to homeowners.
Six presentations were given describing the current appraisal and financing process and may be accessed below: limitations to obtaining proper valuations of energy efficient homes and developments in tracking and processing energy efficiency data. The meeting was attended by participants with experience in the areas of residential financing, energy efficiency research, utilities and appraisals. The key outcome of the meeting was identifying the main challenge for appraising energy efficiency as a lack of access to objective data and viable indicators of building performance (i.e. energy models, commissioning report, energy audits and energy benchmark scores).
